Professor Denise Belsham
Today is a day to celebrate all of the important women in our lives - both personally and professionally. As a department, we have many accomplished women scientists that have shaped the careers of a remarkable number of trainees and students. I encourage you to reach out to a woman this week that has affected your career and/or life in a positive manner to thank her. We also have a tremendous group of students and trainees who are forging their own way into science-related fields. We expect to continue this legacy moving forward!
Nevertheless, we still need to recognize and acknowledge the struggles and barriers that continue to exist for women in science. Often, women face an unconscious bias and harassment that hinders their progress and overall success. We all need to be educated how this occurs and how we can make the environment more friendly to women who truly just want to establish a career in the sciences.
With this in mind, I invite you to a special screening of "Picture a Scientist", an award winning documentary featuring women who have changed the playing field for all of us. I encourage everyone (it's not just for women) to gather on Thursday March 11 at 3:30 pm to view the film together in solidarity with a commitment to examine the potential biases we may have in our own subconscious.
We will also have a panel of women scientists in our department including Drs. Denise Belsham, Patricia Brubaker, Michelle French, Zhong-Ping Feng, Anita McGahan, Andrea Juriscova, and Frances Skinner who will lead a discussion and answer questions after viewing this enlightening and powerful documentary.
When: Thursday March 11 from 3:30 - 5:30 pm (the film is 93 min)
