Research Synopsis

Keywords: Stem cell renewal and engraftment; mesenchymal cells, induced pluripotent cells, human embryonic stem cells.

Detailed Description:
The focus of our research is to study the differentiation of stem cells and the formation of whole organs. We use different organ systems to study cell differentiation, cell-cell signalling, simple and complex three-dimensional organization of cells into functional organs and tissues. We use hematopoietic stem cells, embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells. We are investigating the ability of different stem cell types to differentiate into blood, blood vessels, islets and kidney using different cell culture systems including decellularized organ cultures.

METHODS USED

Cell and tissue culture: Endothelial cells, pancreas cells, human embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent cells.

Procedures: Elisa, gene expression analysis, immunhistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, microarrays, qRT-PCR, RT-PCR, vessel cannulation.

EQUIPMENT USED

Analytical balances, benchtop centrifuge, confocal microscope, culture hood, culture incubators, cryostat, deconvolution fluorescence microscope, dissecting microscope, fluorescence microscope, gel apparatus, laser doppler imager, low- and high-speed centrifuge, low and ultralow freezers, microwave oven, mini vortexer, plate reader, real-time/thermocycler, setups for electropherosis, stirrer/hot plate, vibratome, water baths.
