Research Interests: respiratory muscle action and function during mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory failure; respiratory mechanics in acute respiratory failure; clinical trials of mechanical ventilation strategies to improve outcomes in respiratory failure; phrenic nerve stimulation.

Detailed Description:
I study the control of respiratory drive and effort under mechanical ventilation and techniques to modulate respiratory drive and effort in order to optimize patient spontaneous breathing during mechanical ventilation and to prevent injury to the lung and diaphragm.

METHODS USED

Procedures: ultrasound, esophageal manometry, esophageal EMG, electrical impedance tomography, phrenic nerve stimulation, randomized trials

EQUIPMENT USED

Philips ultrasound, MbMed FluxMed respiratory signal acquisition system, various mechanical ventilators, electrical impedance tomography devices
