Dr. Arkarup Banerjee: "Neural Basis of a Vocal Instinct: Insights from a Singing Mouse"

Type
Physiology Seminar Series

~ Eligible for PSL1000H/PSL2000H/PSL4000Y Course Seminar Attendance ~

Speaker: Dr. Arkarup Banerjee

Assistant Professor, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory School of Biological Sciences, NY, USA

Biography:
Dr. Arkarup Banerjee grew up in India and took an unconventional path into neuroscience, with prior research experience in experimental evolution, the physics of complex systems, and biophysics. His Ph.D. research focused on systems neuroscience, where he identified a neural circuit in the olfactory bulb that normalizes sensory responses, enabling mice to identify odors across a wide range of concentrations. During his postdoctoral work, he pioneered the study of vocal communication in a unique rodent species, the Costa Rican singing mouse. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where his lab pursues an integrative research program addressing a central question in neuroscience and evolutionary biology: how new vocal behaviors evolve.
