Why Physiology?

Interested in graduate studies in the foundational sciences? U of T Physiology offers both research-based and course-based programs to make the most of your passion and aptitude for learning about the systems of the human body. Our research-based MSc and PhD programs enable students to work on cutting-edge foundational science projects in our esteemed faculty's labs. If you prefer applied physiology to research, the MHSc in Medical Physiology is a course-based Professional Master's completed in twelve months. This program culminates with a work placement in the summer term where students apply their skills at start-ups, hospital-based labs, non-profits, and more. The department strongly values professional development, equity and inclusion, and forward-thinking science in all that it does.

Research and Course-based Options

Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosopy (PhD):

Master of Health Science (MHSc) in Medical Physiology:

  • Course-based, professional Master's; focus on big data and healthcare
  • Only 12 months in length
  • Culminates in a hands-on practicum in industry, government, or healthcare
  • Courses in commercialization, big data, and clinical physiology set you up for career success

Vibrant Student Life

The active and engaged Graduate Association of Students in Physiology (GASP) works hard to organize everything from pub nights and karaoke to professional development and mentorship events

Physiology’s own podcast, Research Radio, promotes physiology literacy in a fun, accessible way and is entirely student-directed. Get involved by directing an episode, or working on the technical or promotional sides.
