Dr. Heximer’s history with the CSATVB dates back to when he was first hired as a faculty member in Physiology. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Avrum Gotlieb, then Chair of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, invited Heximer to one of the Society’s annual committees. Not long after that, Heximer was invited to join the CSATVB’s executive committee, of which Gotlieb was then President. Heximer said of his late colleague,
“Avrum Gotlieb was an awesome mentor, colleague, and friend throughout my early years as a cardiovascular physiology researcher. I’m so honoured to have the chance to give a lecture in memory of his incredible legacy.”

As his career progressed, Heximer stayed actively involved with the CSATVB, eventually moving into leadership roles such as Chair of the Education Committee which promotes the activities of the Society’s junior members.
In 2012, Heximer began the enormous undertaking of coordinating the 2018’s International Atherosclerosis Society Meeting. The event’s success saw Heximer elected to serve as President of the CSATVB as Dr. Gotlieb had done so many years before – a full-circle moment for Heximer.
The current CSATVB executive committee felt that Heximer’s personal connection to both Dr. Gotlieb and the CSATVB made him the obvious choice to deliver the inaugural lecture of this new memorial series. He will deliver his lecture, entitled “Don’t you forget about me: The Search for Novel Fibrosis Targets in the Remote Myocardium and Beyond,” on Saturday September 26th, 2026.
