Biography:
Dr. Ahmad Alli is a cardiac anesthesiologist, intensivist, and Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at St. Michael’s Hospital, with an academic appointment at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the physiology of the brain during major cardiovascular and perioperative stress, including cerebral autoregulation, electroencephalography, cerebral oxygenation, hemodynamics, and their relationships with neurological and functional outcomes. He supervises Master’s students and trainees conducting translational and clinical physiology research, including continuous physiological signal analysis and studies of cerebral perfusion. He also leads and contributes to EPOCH, an enhanced recovery and ERAS-based cardiovascular program integrating perioperative physiology, patient-centred outcomes, and quality improvement. His collaborative research includes randomized studies of perioperative analgesia in cardiac surgery, including work published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas. His laboratory offers physiology students direct access to complex human cardiovascular physiology, creating opportunities to study brain behaviour, systemic perfusion, and recovery in clinically relevant settings and to translate mechanistic observations into meaningful patient outcomes.
