Speaker: Dr. Peter Jeffrey Thompson

Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology & Pathophysiology, University of Manitoba
Principal Investigator, Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba

Biography:

Peter completed his PhD in medical genetics (2016) at the University of British Columbia where he studied epigenetic mechanisms in embryronic stem cells under Dr. Matthew Lorincz. He carried out postdoctoral training with Dr. Anil Bhushan at the Diabetes Center at University of California San Francisco (2016-2020), where he switched fields to study islet biology and diabetes. His postdoctoral work discovered a novel beta cell stress pathway and drug target in type 1 diabetes, and was funded by fellowships and awards from the Larry Hillblom Foundation, Diabetes Research Connection and UCSF. In 2020 he joined the University of Manitoba as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology & Pathophysiology and a Principal Investigator in the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. His research program investigates beta cell stress biology and immunology in type 1 diabetes, with goal of developing early stage beta cell-directed therapeutics for halting disease progression. Since starting his lab, he has received major grant funding from CIHR, Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) and Diabetes Canada.
