Sad News - Dr. Mladen Vranic
Mladen Vranic, O.C, O.Ont, MD, DSc, FRSC, FRCP(C), FCAHS
Dr. Vranic was an active professor emeritus in Physiology and the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, a member of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Toronto Department of Medicine, Fellow of the Senior Scholar’s College and adjunct professor at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, and the University of Zagreb, Croatia. He was our Department’s former Chair (1991-1995), a visiting research fellow at Merton College at the University of Oxford (1986) and an invited professor, University of Geneva (1976-1977).
A leader in the field of insulin and diabetes, Dr. Vranic received national and international recognition for his research, scholarship and mentoring including: American Diabetes Association’s Banting Award, Albert Renold Award and the Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award; honorary degrees from the Universities of Toronto, Saskatchewan, McMaster, Zagreb (Croatia) and the Karolinska Institutet; Order of Ontario; Officer of the Order of Canada; Laureate of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame; and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
